About the Salon
Salons were gatherings of intellectuals in the 17th-19th centuries where conversation about politics, art, religion, centered around women such as Henriette Herz or Madame Helvetius. This Salon seeks to engage our current political climate through thoughtful and healthy discussion, respectfully addressing political and cultural issues, and thinking about the ways faith interesects with these issues as well.
Our model is Richard Overton (1599-1664), the Leveller pamphleteer, anabaptist radical, and originator of the idea of “rights.” Based on his radical view of Jesus’ gospel, he believed that every human was equal, and thus we must work toward justice and equality for every person. We believe that thinking through issues from a faith perspective does not narrow our view of the world, but broadens it.
Those who have frequented the Overton Salon will notice some changes. Although the blog was founded by Sarah Eisele-Dyrli with articles regularly submitted by her brother Austin and brother-in-law Andrew Dyrli Hermeling, Sarah has moved on and is now running another blog, nomoreslaveryct.com. After a lull in participation, Andrew has revived the Overton Salon and is now the primary author. Sarah and Austin may reappear as their time allows and other guests will also regularly contribute. Nevertheless, while authors and format may change we will all continue to explore in the spirit of the Salons and Richard Overton.
